Wide Area PTT Radios for Train Safety Officers.
Train Safety Officers (TSO) cover large areas, where there isn’t one single Mobile Network which can provide the necessary coverage required for operations. Northern Rail (Arriva Rail North) serves 15 million people, operates around 300 trains, 450 train stations on almost 2,000 miles of track.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! To implement a DMR Radio system covering these vast stretches of rail track would be financially prohibitive, so Carlisle Support Services (and now Amulet Security) began looking for alternatives.
The PTT Radio Solution
That’s the reason Carlisle (Amulet) began testing the iPTT P500 radio. The customer and TSOs were impressed with the robustness of the P500 radio, it’s ability to connect and hold the connection to a mobile network, the alarm and lone worker functions, the radio dispatcher and much more.
We use multi network SIMs in the iPTT P500 hand portable radio, which connects to all 4 available mobile networks in the UK. For Carlisle (Amulet) the PTT Radio dispatcher is deployed in the control rooms, to monitor and alarms and act on relevant radio communication as well as monitor the location of the TSOs.
This solution provides 2 way radio communication and live GPS tracking, which is useful, should an incident happen.
Carlisle (Amulet) initially deployed 50 x P500 with the Northern Rail TSOs. Over this has grown to more than 70 Nationwide PTT Radios and 4 dispatcher stations used at the Control Rooms.
Because design, set up, programming, deployment, maintenance and support are included, the finance department is happy with the iPTT solution too.
Because our PTT Radio solution is designed with flexibility in mind, adding additional radios, changing names/groups etc. is made on the server, which then propagates the changes to the radios. Changes made are deployed with Over the Air Programming (OTAP) – so no need to bring the radios in for an update/service.
